Job Title:  Business Development Manager

The Opportunity:
Art4Space is looking to appoint a dynamic, inspirational, and experienced manager. During a period of real growth and success for Art4Space this pivotal new role will support our Executive Director in setting the strategic direction of the company.

The successful candidate will be an innovative manager working within the arts or creative industries, who cares about using the arts and creativity as a catalyst for change. Working in a community setting as well as scoping commercial opportunities.

Context of the Role:
Art4Space is Social Enterprise / CIC, limited by guarantee. We have a small, dedicated team; part-time managers and employ numerous freelance artists, practitioners, and teachers to augment our team operationally and to deliver our commissions and training. Our annual turnover is approx. £200K and our work is funded mainly through grants and trusts and earned income through a trading arm, for example our shop.

Art4Space was founded in 1999 by 3 partners. We are a multi-award-winning, community art company, founded and run by women. Our aim is to increase accessibility to the arts, empower diverse groups to develop communication, promote active citizenship, celebrate diversity, and promote social cohesion and wellbeing. We specialise in mosaic and ceramic art and deliver projects, training courses and classes in a range of education and community settings, including schools, housing associations, hospitals, community centres and youth clubs. Art4Space is based in Stockwell and works predominantly in Lambeth and Greater London but does consider projects outside of this area including international projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with and for the Executive Director and work with the Board to deliver company objectives
  • Oversee and manage grant funding
  • Proven track record of effective project monitoring, evaluation, maintain records and report writing
  • Oversee the development of training: Creative Learning Hub and potential new space: Youth Hub
  • Oversee corporate relations, engagement, and projects
  • Devise ideas for future projects and collaborations
  • Help with reaching strategic aims and vision in the business plan
  • Ensure costs are controlled through close monitoring of income and expenditure
  • Co-ordinate delivery of papers for 3 monthly board meeting


Person Specification Essential:

Excellent communication skills, written and verbal

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a diverse range of people
Proactive, problem-solving and skills for constructive challenge
A positive attitude with a high level of self-motivation and ability to work on your initiative
Able to meet timeframes and deadlines

Proven experience of initiating and managing new business
Capacity to inspire, influence and motivate others
Ability to deal with information in a confidential manner and respond with sensitivity
Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage a variety of tasks
Administrative and IT skills. We use the platforms Lamplight (for MEL) Slack (for funding) and NOCN (accreditation)
Experience of working across different sectors (corporate and community) and developing links with others
Desirable but not essential: good knowledge of the arts, culture, and education sector and up to date with policies


Examples of tasks:
Identify grants, help to write bids, grant reports, annual report, write case studies, cashflow, update business plan, write articles and features, monthly newsletter, attend meetings, policies, and procedures.

Interview Process:
The process will involve a 2-step panel interview process with the Executive Director and Board. Zoom and face to face.
The second interview will take place in London.

Pay and working environment
The successful candidate will need to either already hold or be willing to have an enhanced DBS check due to the nature of the work

Hybrid model: Studio and WFH – can be flexible

21 hours per week as freelance status / £23,400 per annum (£150 per day) 

3-month review leading to a yearly contract.
