My Wish Dish

Art4Space is encouraging you to get your creative on and join our mandala inspired art project.

Mandala, which is Sanskrit for circle or discoid object, is a ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism representing the universe. Its circular form symbolises the idea that life goes on, is infinite – that everything is connected. It also gives us a nice canvas to work from and encourages all kinds of symmetry, pattern and pattern breaking. Handily there are usually plenty of circular things in a home you could repurpose, from paper plates to lids or you could cut your own from an old box.

It felt relevant to consider and create a symbol of unity and progression when we find ourselves so atomised. To focus and centre ourselves (also circular images) on a task and to share it with our community.

With all that in mind we invite you to create your own mandala. Find your base and decorate it with whatever you wish – and don’t forget to add the positive thought, wish or intention.

We’ve added a few pictures of the ones we made but we’re sure you can do much better. Share your Wish dish in front of your face for a portrait on Instagram by tagging them #MyWishDish or mail us your portrait to info@art4space.co.uk.
This is also part of BBC’s Get Creative At Home, so remember to tag #GetCreativeAtHome with your portrait!

Wish Dish Project

This at home project does not rely on special supplies; in fact part of the creative fun is looking for ever day objects lying around the house to incorporate in your design.

Examples of these could be:

  • Bottle tops
  • Buttons
  • Small cereal packet toys
  • Lego pieces
  • Expired pens
  • Marbles
  • Bits of broken crockery
  • You get the idea.

If you prefer to work with paper and paint to create a picture or collage in a more two dimensional way this is just as effective .

As a base you will need to find or make a circular shape.

This could be:

  • An old china plate
  • A paper or plastic plate
  • A circular lid from a biscuit or chocolate box tin
  • You can also cut out a circle shape from a piece of card or box

You will also need PVA glue or similar and a small brush to stick your pieces on
